River Cruise in India

River Cruise in India offers a unique way to explore the country’s culture, landscapes and heritage. From the sacred Ganges to the mighty Brahmaputra and the tranquil Kerala backwaters, these journeys reveal India from a completely different perspective.

A river cruise is one of the most immersive ways to discover India’s culture, history and landscapes. Travelling along legendary waterways, visitors pass ancient cities, remote villages and spectacular natural scenery while experiencing the traditions and daily life that thrive along the riverbanks.

India is a vibrant and culturally diverse country. For travellers who want to learn more, the nation is rich in experiences and diversity. Taking a river journey through India allows you to experience this remarkable country in a way few other forms of travel can offer.

In addition to the lower and upper Ganges, a cruise in India includes the Brahmaputra River Cruise. On both the Ganges and Brahmaputra river cruises, travellers encounter places of worship and historically significant towns and cities that have supported life along their banks for centuries. These two rivers are extremely significant to India.

River Ganges flows 2,525 kilometers across India before entering Bangladesh on the other side.  Before being discharged into the Bay of Bengal, it travels through the Gangetic Plain of India, Bangladesh, and the Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.

Another trans-boundary river that passes through Bangladesh, India, and China is the Brahmaputra.  The river, known as Siang, enters India in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.  Its name again changes to Dihang as it goes across the plains.  As it approaches the state of Assam, it widens to a width of up to 20 km in certain places. Our river cruises allow travellers to fully immerse themselves in the local way of life, exploring busy towns and traditional villages along the riverbanks. Take rickshaw rides, see clay temples, go to villages, and watch the playful Gangetic dolphins.  The food and activities on the cruise tour truly capture the essence of Indian culture in the most unpretentious form.

River cruises in India provide unique travel experiences on major waterways such as the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Kerala’s backwaters, making them some of the best river cruise experiences in India. These cruises vary from short day trips to multi-day explorations, often featuring cultural visits, wildlife sightings, and onboard meals.

Popular routes include the Ganges River between Kolkata and Varanasi, the Brahmaputra in Assam, and the Kerala backwaters.
