At the end of the 19th century, Kashmir saw an influx of European tourists. However, due to land ownership restrictions imposed by Maharaja Ranbir Singh, visitors were unable to build permanent homes. This led to the innovation of “floating houses.”
While some historical accounts, such as those by Sir Francis Younghusband, attribute the idea to an Englishman named M.T. Kennard around 1883-1888, local history highlights the role of Pandit Naraindas. Around 1885, after his shop was destroyed by fire, Naraindas moved his business onto a “doonga” (a traditional residential boat). He eventually improved the structure with planks and shingles, creating the first functional houseboat.
Recognising the demand from Europeans, Naraindas transitioned into boat-building. His first managed houseboat was named the “Kashmir Princess.” By the time Swami Vivekananda visited in 1897, houseboats had already become a documented part of the Kashmiri landscape.
The Naraindas family continued to lead the industry, building and managing approximately 300 boats until 1948, when a decline in foreign tourism led to the eventual sale of the business in the 1950s.
